Permanent formwork systems offer multiple benefits.

Words by Justin Foote

One of the criticisms levelled at the building industry is its perceived lack of innovation uptake in a world where the maxim ‘innovate or die’ seems to hold true for a raft of industries.

So often, though, the industry can be hamstrung by outmoded regulations and procedures.

“The way we live, especially in our cities, is changing,” says Josh Hamilton, General Manager of AFS Wall. “We are building more and more multi-unit dwellings such as apartments and retirement or lifestyle villages.

“Consequently, traditional modes of construction are not as effective when it comes to these forms of housing. Permanent formwork systems such as Logicwall and Rediwall are solutions that offer a number of efficiencies that have flow-on effects for the entire industry.”

Logicwall and Rediwall by AFS Wall have been specifically created for use in intertenancy applications, such as apartments and multiunit developments.

An efficient construction and engineering solution in one

Josh says that permanent formwork is still a relatively new concept in the New Zealand marketplace, however the AFS Wall team is dedicated to helping educate industry professionals on the benefits these systems offer.

“The AFS Wall team all come from a construction background and have 15-plus years working with permanent formwork systems. We are able to back up the product with expertise and service and are ready to support design professionals from specification and compliance through to construction.”

AFS Wall, which has its head office and production facility in Nelson, along with branch offices and install teams throughout New Zealand, offers a supply and install service, ensuring a quality result is achieved on each project. The team has completed projects from Northland down to Queenstown.

“The ‘raw’ materials—steel and fibre cement board—are sourced from CSR in Australia, then cut to size and assembled in Nelson to project shop drawings. From there, they can be easily shipped anywhere in the country.

“Due to the lightweight nature of our products—Logicwall and Rediwall—they only require lightweight trucks for delivery, plus, fewer trips are needed. Likewise, they don’t require a crane for installation; either negating the need for one entirely or freeing it up for use elsewhere on site.

“This also has the added benefit of a reduction in build time and construction costs, as well as reduced health and safety risks associated with working with much heavier products.”

Each Logicwall panel incorporates the functions of permanent sacrificial formwork, framework, hard-wearing finish and deep beam transfer in one fast-to-erect solution.

Standing on its own merits

Along with all the benefits the system brings to each project, Josh says the real game-changer is that AFS Wall products satisfy fire, acoustic and load-bearing requirements all in the one system, as well as providing a substrate suitable for finishing trades.

“Permanent formwork systems really are the ideal solution for multi-residential applications such as apartment complexes, retirement villages and care facilities—basically, any project that requires intertenancy walls.

“We have a very experienced team of project managers who oversee the installation process. By looking after the construction side, clients have the confidence that any issues that may arise will be dealt with by an onsite team—customers are only dealing with one point of contact throughout the process.”

And it seems that word is catching on, as more industry professionals look for ways to increase efficiencies in the construction process.

“We’re entering a very exciting phase in the evolution of the business with an increase in sales enquiries from companies looking for smarter ways to build.”
