Beach House

Website

Striking lines and playful overtones in this home provide a contemporary take on the traditional kiwi beach house, which is just what a young Christchurch couple desired for their first family home.

A stone’s throw from the sand dunes, the highly unusual section was very long and narrow, so presented huge planning challenges. Flat and low pitch roof forms, depth in plan and material combinations ensured a street presence and scale relative to its narrow frontage. The classic weatherboard and ‘panel & batten’ beach bach aesthetic was reinterpreted with modern materials selected for withstanding the corrosive salt-laden environment.

Fun, personalized features include a porthole window, outdoor shower, and a series of very low windows of which one is a door for the owners’ beloved dog.
